“Car Week” on the Monterey Peninsula 2015 ~ Pebble Beach, Carmel, Pacific Grove, Monterey ~ August 11-August 17th

2007 xmas - 2008 518 (Small) (2)

“Car Week” is finally  here on the Monterey Peninsula!  Soon we’ll be spotting fantastic and incredible cars as we drive on the roadways in Carmel, Pebble Beach, Carmel Valley, Pacific Grove, and Monterey.  Already car enthusiasts are converging on the Monterey Peninsula from all corners of our nation and beyond to attend a week of events, road rallies, parades, parties, racing,  fashion shows, and car auctions.

2007 xmas - 2008 527 (Small)

The week culminates on Sunday, August 16th with the prestigious Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach.   “Car people” look forward to this week  with its events and parties all year long.  For the locals it is just great fun to partake of some of the events and enjoy the “Car Eye Candy” on the streets of Carmel and Pebble Beach! Antique cars polished to perfection, Ferrari’s, Corvettes, Porsches, Bentleys – you name it and its here.  Even the exotic Lamborghini!

2007 xmas - 2008 523 (Small)

Some of the events are quite costly, but there are two FREE events that one should not miss.  My favorite event is “Concours on the Avenue” (Tuesday August 11th 10:00am-5:00pm) which takes place on Carmel-by-the-Sea’s world famous Ocean Avenue.  This is the newest event founded by Doug and Genie Freedman.  Sixteen blocks of downtown will be filled with collector cars including Luxury Cars, Muscle Cars, Hot Rods, and Sporting Cars.  The spit and polish needed to prepare these automobiles for showing and judging is incredible!

Tiffany will be on hand with impressive trophies for the winners and, of course, those famous “blue boxes”.

This impressive presentation is free to spectators and benefits the Carmel Foundation that provides a wide variety of services to local seniors.  Local residents and visitors come in droves so arrive early and wear comfortable shoes.  You can even bring your four-footed friend if you wish.

To add to the fun the merchants up and down Ocean Avenue have decorated their show windows with displays that depict the car industry.  Be sure to check out our Alain Pinel Realtors window display at the NW corner of Ocean and Dolores.  Grab your mate and your camera and come enjoy the day!

2007 xmas - 2008 519

The second FREE event, the Pebble Beach Tour d’Elegance presented by Rolex, is also not to be missed and is on Thursday, August 13th .  You can either find a spot to watch the cars drive by on their tour of the Monterey Peninsula or you can view the cars from Noon-2:00pm on Ocean Avenue in downtown Carmel.  You’ll see cars that will be appearing at the Concours d’ Elegance on Sunday.

Memories of the 2013 AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament – Pebble Beach (Part 2) Ray Romano Between a Rock and a Hard Place

Ray Romano between a rock and a hard place.

Ray Romano trying to get out of the sand trap

As the hardy ones who sat out on the patio with cool temperatures and cloudy skies we buttoned our down vests and waited for the next golfers to appear at this year’s AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament.  First, a golf ball landed in the sand trap in front of us and then a marshal made his way through the rough and placed an orange flag by the ball in the trap.  Uh, oh . . .someone’s in trouble.  Then, making his way towards the trap to check out the location of the ball was Ray Romano.  Ray is slight of build and not nearly as tall as he appears on his TV show.  As he looked at the golf ball he saw it was wedged close to a rock.   I can imagine what he was saying to himself since there was no way he could hit that ball where it was located.  Getting the nod that it was OK to move the rock, he tried, but the stubborn rock would not budge.  He looked around and a fellow hurried over and helped him move the rock.

He took his shot.  Ohhhh . . . into the sand again.  As he diagnosed the situation he realized he needed to walk all around the sand trap in order to enter leaving the least amount of tracks for his caddy to rake over.  As he walked right past us he glanced our way and I gave a silent wave.  He said, “I’ll get out of here eventually.”  Little did he know at the time how challenging it would be.

He wasn’t about to land in the sand again so this next time he swung with determination . . . this time his ball sailed over the green, hit a tree high and his ball fell into a heavy rough.  Sometimes you just have a bad hole!  Luckily Eric Compton, his pro partner, had a better score on the hole.  No need for Ray to go on suffering.  The marshal picked up his ball from the very deep grass and handed it to Ray.  As the group left the hole, we waved to Ray and hoped his next hole would be so much better in the 2013 AT&T Pro Am Golf Tournament.
